I have checked all over the area on top of the trans and rearend for the serial number on my Super 101, and can't find anything even scraping the paint. Can a person determine the year form the engine serial number? I like the tractor she runs pretty well but the governonr doesn't kick in like I've been used to with my previous Farmalls and Oliver's.

Many of these old tractors have had a helper lever bolted on the top transmission case to make it easier to move the PTO-pulley shift lever. The lever brackets is right over the stamped serial #'s and has to be unbolted to see the model and serial#'s

The Serial # tag was originally on the front frame just ahead of the clutch pedal, it is (was)
oval and riveted on. Built 39,40,41,42 only 256 built in 42. A freind of mine just found a 1942.

I found the oval plate, but it's so corroded that even buffing hasn't brought out any legible numbers.

It's gotta be there, hand stamped into the machined surface on the left side of the top of the transmission differential (not too far from where you'd rest your feet on the runningboards). Specifically between the cast iron shifting platform (where the gearshift assembly is mounted) and the steel plate that bolts down over the rear end. It is probably hard to find, maybe the guy stamping it didn't feel like punching the numbers in too deeply that day but I'd bet that it is there, all filled up with paint and corrosion. The numbers are a decent size so don't expect tiny little ones. Go take another look, bet you a beer that you'll find it.
