suddenly my mf40 will not turn to the right. the steering wheel turns, but the wheels do not. i have taken it apart, and the ps pump seems to be working just fine. is it as simple as it looks? there are four hoses, two to each ram? is this a problem common to mf40s, and if so, what exactly is the fix? any help would be appreciated. as an extra, if i lift the front of the tractor off the ground with the bucket, it will turn just fine.

thanks,

jamie

my mf40 has a similar problem. I always have to keep the ps reservoir full or the steering does not work. at one time my steering cylinders leaked enough that the steering wheel required constant turning to keep it going straight. Once I fixed the leaks that problem went away. The hydraulic motor behind the steering wheel usually doesn't act up. You may check the steering cylinders for internal leakage. This could cause some slow or no response when turning the steering wheel. otherwise, my guess would be internal leakage or bypassing of the fluid is happening. hope this helps

My 50a industrial with a diesel has the same problem. It will not turn and it seems the the problem is mostly to the right. If I stop and back up the problem will usually go away for awhile. Also I have noticed that pressure seems to be building up in my power steering reservoir and the problem goes away when I take the plug out and let the pressure off. I don't have a solution for the problem unfortunatly. If you find a soultion please let me know.

Hi Jamie My MF50 did somthing very similar recently, on mine there is a shaft that goes down to the front end just in front of the power steering pump. It has a spline on both ends mine was stripped but just holding. Any pressure on the wheels and it would slip and only turn one way and as you said lift them of the ground and it work fine.
My problem was that the previous owner had tried to fix it with one little weld. My cheapest and easyest option was to reweld it so far it has held and is working fine. Next time it will be an oxy torch job and cut it to pieces to get it out and replace the parts.

Hope this story is of some help and points you in the right direction (but beware it might send you up the garden path!)

Cheers Marty
