My Massey Harris Mustang has a sticking clutch. The pedal works ok but it does not disengage the clutch. This occurred before after sitting for a long time but now it is permanent. I cant move the tractor unless I start it in gear. Once I take it out of gear the clutch wont disengage and I'm stuck. Any suggestions from the experts would be greatly appreciated. I have owned her since 1968 and she has been a great tractor.

John,

I recently had the same problem with my Massey Harris Pony that I restored. The tractor had been sitting for about 15 years. When I finally got the tractor running I was hard to get it into gear without grinding. I adjusted the clutch linkage and all that but it was no good. I pulled the clutch and found that it was glued to the flywheel. Over time it had become oil soaked and the heat generated from the slippage bonded the clutch to the flywheel. I pried them apart. The lining still had a lot of life to it so I decided to try and save it. (I'm also a certified cheapskate!) I wiped it down with brake cleaner and then boiled it it water with 10 percent Simple Green cleaner that you can buy just about anywhere. It was great to watch the oil float to the surface of the water!! Then, I baked it in the oven at 250 degrees to dry it and ooze out any remaining oil which I wiped off. It worked great!! The clutch shows no signs of slipping under load. All this may sound crazy but I swear it worked. Fortunately my wife is very understanding about these things and was only mildly curious over what was stewing in our kitchen. Good luck! Jack.

prop the clutch pedal down overnight relaxing the clutch disk.If you can get access to the clutch disk slip a putty knife between it and the pressure plate ad flywheel with the pedal pushed down of course.if you get it loose spray a little WD40 on the flywheel ,WD40 not oil ,oil will slip the clutch and WD40 will evaporate leaving just a film.rust is what stuck it in the first place. When working on the clutch to get it loose don't be afraid to get a little rough ,a few chips out of it wont hurt anything

John-From what you described the clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel. My 44-6 did the same thing and I worked the tractor for a couple of hours and the clutch disc came loose. If you can't get it to loosen up that way you will have to pull it apart. If I can be of any other help drop me a e-mail.Bruce C.
