MF-35 engine trouble

I bought a '62 MF-35 listed as "Has new engine, new sleeve kit, rings, rod bearings, main bearings new... good oil pressure."

Sounded great. But after running a few hours, two problems emerged: (a) oil seeping into radiator (have drained and replaced coolant twice), although no evidence of water in crankcase; and (b) small amount of water sprays from front of engine (possibly water pump?) when running hard under load, or full throttle on road.

Any suggestions about diagnosis before I spend huge amounts of time or money tearing it apart, without really knowing what I'm doing?

Rusty, Sounds like you have two problems. Oil in radiator is probably down to a leaking head gasket - if the engine has recently been rebuilt has the head been torqued down properly? Worth checking. Spray of water from front could be a pin hole leak in a water hose or, more likely, a leak from the radiator core. This will only show up when the engine is hot and the cooling system under pressure. Hope this helps, Peter.

Thanks for your help. I tried torquing the heads but could only use a box-end wrench due to obstruction from gas tank. But head bolts were too tight to budge at all with fairly long wrench, so that might not be the problem. Any other things to investigate before removing hood, fuel tank and valve cover?

Water spray came from the complete absence of two of three nuts used to fasten water pump to block! Nice job (not) done by the guy who "rebuilt" the engine and sold me the tractor... he even spray-painted the threads for me, I guess to keep the rust off! Water pump is also wiggling a little, and pressure pumped into radiator at filler opening causes another, as yet undiagnosed leak.
