I recently bought a Massey Harris 50 that looks like the clutch may need replaced. I live on 30 acres that is on hills, as I went down the hill a few weeks ago I got to the bottom of the hill and I noticed it was hard to shift gears. I have to idle the tractor real low to shift the tractor, but sometimes it will right into gear. Does this seem like a clutch problem an does anyone know how hard a clutch is to replace an where I would purchase a clutch for this tractor. Any help is appreciated.

I can grind the gears pretty good at times myself. Even with a brand new clutch I still have the same symptoms you describe. It is not a sports car by any means. If you come to a dead stop for any period and don't throttle down, you will grind them. It even happenens if you are slow on the fwd/rev change. I think it is normal and after awhile you get used to how to shift it. My guess is that most of us youngsters have no experience with older vehicles without synchro trannys so our skills are not up to par with elder statesmen out there who have no problem shifting older equipment.
