I have a 35 with the 3 cyl. perkins. I have a lot of play in the steering wheel that seems to be coming from the box. The rest of the front end is fairly tight. I have a service manual but does anyone have any suggestions as to tightening up the steering box.

Hi Rick -

There seem to be two types of boxes on the 35's - the US models have bearings down at thelower end of the column, adjusted with shims. The I&T manual covers this style.

The English models - probably most of the Canadian units - have bearings bottom and top with a double nutted adjustment (like some older bicycle axles) just under the steering wheel. This unit has a grease nipple just above the dash to get the top bearing.

If your slop is in the column bearings (the wheel will move up and down as you rotate it) you can tighten it up by the shims or double nut - if the bearings are ok.

If the wheel doesn't rise and fall, the problem is inside the box, and exploratory surgery is indicated.

Drop me a note if I can help further.
