Which Way Does the Spring Go?

My MF135 gas has the old style canister oil filter with internal replaceable element (not spin-on type. Does the spring go next to the block, or at the top of the canister? Does the flat washer on the spring go toward the element or away from it? I've looked thru my operator's manual and the I&T Service manual- can't find any diagram or notation of this anywhere. I assume the spring would allow the oil to bypass if the filter was too clogged? Any help here would be appreciated.

Spring at bottom of canister then washer, this pushes element against block, if it gets restricted the element pushes away from block and " bypasses".
