MF 202 trouble

I purchased a '62 202 last fall. It has the model 200 loader and 3 pt/pto. Z-134 gas engine. The seller claimed to have taken the tractor in on trade for a larger, more powerfull unit, and therefore didn't know much about the tractor. He indicated he'd replaced all the ignition components. This looked to be true: Plugs, wires, coil, & distributor all appeared new. We had a light winter in Iowa so I didn't put but about 10 hrs on it moving snow. About a month passed between the last snow and last Friday, when all attempts to start the machine were to no avail. Discovered the distributor was completely shot: dog-ears on the bottom of the fly-weights, which engage the drive plate, were completely sheared off & ground-up. The drive gear didn't show any abnormal wear or damage. $200 & a new distributor later it started right up, but in adusting the advance I discovered a "lot" of vibration in the distributor. Repair manual indicates could be timing gear backlash, cam journal, thrust plate, or distributor drive gear wear/damage. Anyone have any experience with this problem & , hopefully, a less catastrophic possibility for the vibration?

Drive gear on the old distributor was in good shape. Pulled the new one off & was able to inspect the gear teeth on the cam with a flashlight-they look to be in good shape. Was also able to carefully pry on both sides of the cam gear with a screwdriver, no perceptible thrust or axial play. Judging from the oil markings on the new distributor drive gear teeth, I'd say only the bottom half of those teeth are engaging the cam drive gear. Is this correct/acceptable? I also have a "little" blue/white smoke coming from the valve cover vent tube. Assumed I was in for a valve adjustment, if not a head overhaul. Could a stuck exhaust valve be causing/transmitting vibration to the cam/distributor?

the vibration is just in the distributer, I ask because it should fit in very tight. Maybe the gear on the cam is worn slightly and the gear on the new distributer is not, making a slight mesh mismatch. don't think its cam bearing as low oil pressure will result. you can check the back lash as well. I would double check the new distributer and make sure its ok.

Dave,
I have a 58 MF 202 with the engine out doing a complete rebuild currently.

First question, when you replaced the distributor was there any indication of wear on the distributor gear indicating wear on the cam?

As far as the vibration goes, first thing that comes to mind would be a cracked governor which mounts to the front of the cam. Cracked governors are a fairly common problem.

This would transmit a vibration through the cam into the distributer.

I would suggest starting the engine and see if the governor arm has the same or amplified vibration as you feel in the distributor.

Hope this helps.
