The MF-65 manual calls for straight mineral gear oil SAE90.
Can you substitute hydraulic oil for it? The remote hydraulics uses the transmision oil which when you mix equipment used with diferent tractors you will end up mixing the oils.
Or can someone tell me the equivalent Mobil oil or other grade that will work fine?

Sure would like to solve this one as it comes up repeatedly. (No offense to Pete) It's been answered various ways and they'll all work. I've seen guys with the light stuff in theirs and wouldn't change for nothing. Let 'em put a two bottom behind it and go till it chews up some gears. My sure way to do it is to go to a TSC Store and get the hydraulic/transmission oil for old Ford tractors (1939 to !952?).API type GL-5 They're the same thing. Once had a 9N that had a decal under battery cover that said put in so many quarts of this and a quart or two of that and gave Texaco or Mobil part numbers. Be nice if we could find out the mix of oils, probably be cheaper and M/F wouldn't ask $40 for five gallons. Anybody got this decal and the numbers? The numbers have probably changed cause oil has but someone could look them up in a modern number and nobody would have this problem again. Anybody want to be a hero? This'll make you one! You would be wise to stay with SAE-90 unless you are in the north country. Then you could use most any brand of hydraulic transmission fluid till warmer weather returns, then put the 90 back in. These older tractors do not operate well on current tractor fluid above 40 to 50 degrees F.

MF makes/markets an oil specifically for their
transmission/hydraulics...

I use it but I really don't know the technical specifications of their oil and/or how it differs from anything else....

Most of the hydraulics I've dealt with use 46x
or variant therof.

Many of the MF tractors manufactured during the 60s and 70s require use of MF spec 1129A fluid. These tracors have the same fluid being used by the hydraulic system, transmission, and the rear differential systems. This product is usually readily available at most supply houses. Generic brands here in the southeastern USA sell for about $20 per 5 gallon bucket, MF brand is about $40.

Hmmm... Perhaps look for new MF dealer around your area ?

The last quantity I bought out here (MF) from the MF dealer was 2.5 gal for $12...

By the time I factor in the 40 mile round trip
to the oil jobber I guess I didn't do too bad on it.
