I have a 165 w G176 Cont, 50 hours on a restoration. I took it out of the barn last week, and it ran fine for about 10 minutes, then it started running really rough. I drained the tank replaced the fuel, and cleaned the sediment bowl and strainer. It still wouldn't stay running, I then took the carb off cleaned up the bowl, and checked the float position, and put the carburator back on, it still wants to die to out, so then I adjusted the carburator, and that didn't help. I can't figure this one out. I think it may be a plug went out, but then it doesn't really sound like a miss, though it will back fire if you pull the throttle down real fast. Any suggestions? The Coil, distributor, points, and wire are a year old. And if anyone knows what the correct replacement plug is for this tractor I would like to know, asI can't find this info anywhere.

Rob, If I had this happen, one thing I would do start and run it in total darkness you look at the wires, coil, cap, the result might look like the fourth of July. I did this as mine was back firing and sputtering under load. Replaced the coil, and the wires and took care of it. The coil was grounding through its case to the bracket, and the wires were shooting little sparks here and there. The problem seemed worse under load and after it would be run for a while. Good Luck.

My Dad had a Super 90 that went to the dealer for a valve job. He got it home and it would misfire. Dealer had installed Champion plugs. Finally switched to Autolite and the problem was solved

I agree about the champion plugs. I never use them because they just don't last in big engines. I ussually go with AC Delco.

I took the distributor off and filed the points a bit, and it will run now, half-way decent, but it still is running rough. I believe I am going to order a set of points, new button, and condenser, what are your thought about that approach? Now it runs, but coughs around when you open the throttle up until, sometimes backfiring, it just started doing all this so I don't believe the timing is to blame, it must be the points. I thought it might be the coil as it is getting pretty warm, but somone here told me one time that coils do not go bad unless they leak out there coolant, and burn up, this one is only a year old, and shows no sign of leakage.

Have you done any proper tuneup checks? Set the dwell or at least the point gap with a good set of point installed, make sure the plugs and wires are good. I answered earlier thinking you'd at least check the basics before looking for the oddball problems. Good luck.

I've read on the forum here that what you describe is characteristic of a bad condensor. Tractor will run fine till the condensor gets hot (from the engine heat or the current I don't know) and then it doesn't function correctly. Never used the advice but I know for sure I did read it here.

Sounds like ignition to me. 10 +/- minutes and it coughs it's guts, electrical piece heating up. Coil? Put a timing light on the coil wire and run it and watch the pattern. Even when it dies the pattern should stay consistent, slowing with the rpm, till it stops turning.
