Hi, I am changing the brakes on my neighbors MF35 and need to change the axle seals. I have pulled the axle out and need to know if I have to heat the ring that holds the bearing from sliding toward the splined end of the axle shaft in order to slide it and the bearing off to get to the outer seal. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Eric Nulsen

I did a job for my boss on her Ford 2000 tractor a few years ago. The ring and old bearing will need to be cut off and replaced with new ones. Only makes sense really to put new parts in while you are there anyhow. One thing, when you go to put the new retaining ring back on, place it on a vise or some kind of piece of steel, take a torch and a rosebud and heat the ring till you see a black stripe follow the flame around the ring. It will slide right on without any problems at all. I had second thoughts when told how to do this but it worked like a charm on this one, slid right down tight where it needed to be. HOller back at let me know if you have any problems and the outcome of the job.

Okay, Thanks for all the info guys. Just so I get this straight it sounds like I'm going to have to get a new bearing as well becase it will self destruct when I press it off. Just to clarify this. If I were to heat the bearing to get it off, I would have to heat it too much and would ruin it?

Thanks for your help

Eric: It is generally never a good idea to heat ANY bearing.. What we are talking about here is the two seals..as I said earlier: there are two..an INNER seal..and an OUTER seal. The inner seal is not a problem, it is the outer seal that rests behind the wheel bearing..that is the problem child so to speak. The previous writer explains a different but possible way of getting the outside housing off over your axle so that you can replace the OUTER seal. I was unable to do it that way( pounding, pressing, prying) and had to have it pressed off at a machine shop. Didnt cost much at all. ($10.00-20.00) and it was well worth it. Good luck.

Eric after you get that collar off ift is possible (sometimes) to remove the bearings in one piece if you dont mind some HARD work. Find the thickest piece of steel you can get your hands on , take ahold of the axle by the flange where the wheel bolts on and lift straight up and slam the end of the axle STRAIGHT down on that thick piece of steel after about 40-50 hard hits the bearing and seal housing along with the bearing should fall off. Keep in mind this process is not easy and can smash fingers if they are put in the wrong place. have fun I have done alot of these in the past. William

Eric that ring needs to be cut off the axle and replaced with a new one when reassembling. The best way to cut it off without damage to the bearing is to drill a hole in it about a 1/4in should do, then take a hammer and cold chisel and split the ring where you drilled the hole. Hope this helps it is not as bad as it sounds if you need anymore help just post or e-mail William

Willy is right on about the retaining ring. Also, the bearings will not "slide" off, for some reason they are just about impossible to remove intact even with a press. The replacements drive back on pretty easily though.

good luck!

Yep! it has to be cracked off alright, but I normally heat the new ring and it will slide easily on, and then, when it cools and shrinks, it is impossible to pull off. (manual says so, too!)

Eric: Just got thru changing my axle seals. The other two responses are correct indeed. I used a small sledge and cold chisel. Dont want to heat that collar..too close to the main bearings and may boil the grease out of them, etc. Problem I had was the outer seal and getting the base to slide out over the axel after removal of that collar. Used a 12 ton press and still couldnt get it off. Had to take it to a machine shop with huge press...you will need two bearings..inner and outer along with new collar ring. Good luck. Orlando
