Has anyone successfully mowed with a 6' brush hog behind a gasoline powered MF65? Was it under powered?

If not a 6' brush hog what is the largest you've heard of?

Ken

What you are cutting will make a lot of difference.I like to see a little dirt fly out the back of the brush hog now and then if I'm cutting over grown land. Last fall I rented some ground that had laid idle for 6 years and I was down to 2nd gear with a J D 4020 and a 7ft. brush hog. I've seen an M F 65 and a 6ft. brush hog cutting set aside ground in 5th gear.He was cutting 6 to 8 inches high.I think a brush hog with a stump jumper pulls harder.

I bought a '58 MF-65 gas last year. I mowed 12 acres of 5 foot weeds over 2 days with a 6 ft mower. It worked great! I so glad I bought it instead of of the smaller TO-30 or 8N. I can't say the previous owner took good care of it, but I still feel that I got a steal at $1800.

I've spent a lot of time on MF65s and MF165s, and used both a 5' and 6' mower. The 5' won't quite cover your tracks, and the 6' one does so nicely. Don't recall ever being short on power except for maybe taking down trees I shouldn't have messed with anyway.

I've wondered about using an old 10' pull type for mowing weeds, but have never had the chance to try it.

Ken:

I have a MF 65 gas with a 6' brush hog and it has plenty of power to pull it thru almost anything.

I live on a five acre lot with some steep hills and it does fine.

This tractor has 52 hp so it will do almost anything u want it to.

Hope this helps u out

I too have hills to mow. I wanted to purchase the right size mower the first time. Thank you for the information.

Mike, I've been looking at a '58 MF65 that is gas, what kind of service have you gotten from yours? Also, how hard on gas are they?

kb,
Before you buy it, check the front axle bearings. If the tractor has been operated with disintegrated bearings you're in for a rough ride to repair the front support and center axle correctly. I have estimates as high as $600.

Mine suffered from years of neglect and poor mechanics. I'm rebuilding the engine and have over $2300 in parts! My advise to you is to save your money and buy something newer with low hours on it. They're out there you just have to look.

I'm a bit confused, by axle bearings are you talking about replacing wheel bearings and spindles? Or is their some kind of pivot point bearing that will be bad?

kb,
YES! YES!, There is a major axial pivot axis. It allows the ends of the front axle to pivot up and down. If you would like detailed pictures and first hand information, post your email address, I can fill your cup!
