MF-245 Engine Noise

I am evaluating two (2) identical MF-245's for purchase of one (1). Both have Perkins diesel w/top exhaust and identical hours and run good. My concern is a clunking sound generated by one during throttle advance only. I don't know much about diesel engines, but it sounds a little like a gas engine knocking under load. It still runs great at full throttle and does not miss. Should I be concerned about this noise? What is causing this and what should I look for? Thanks in advance - Craig

Sounds like fuel advance detonation to me....

One of the tractors may have some anti-gel
additive in the diesel..

I have heard diesels 'knocking' like this before with too much additive.

But then again.. could be something else.
the idea about an oil analysis isn't a bad
one.

Hours are identical only if the tach is hooked up all the time.

Piston slap comes to mind.

Hows the oil pressure and blow by from the draft tube? Can you get 'em on a dyno and wring em out?
What's cold weather starting like?

Does the oil seem really thick? Get an Amsoil test kit and have it sampled. Might be the best $20 you spend.

Supposedely tach's are accurate on both. If I understand piston slap correctly, wouldn't it do the same thing under full load?

Oil pressure is fine on both according to dash gage. It's not possible to dyno test. Cold weather starting is fine on both, in fact both came from Canada. Oil seems thick on the one that doesn't have the noise I'm refering to.

What does the Amsoil test kit check for?

Thanks for your response.

Aluminum metal means the pistons are getting beat up, lead, tin, copper the bearings. Coolant, internal leak. Thick oil won't hide piston slap. I have seen piston slap go away as operating temperature is reached. Sometimes only on load and others only on acceleration. The latter makes it tough to differentiate from harmless combustion knock.

Piston slap I have seen progresses rapidly after 10-20 engine hours.

Pay for the oil test.
Change the oil in the best candidate (so you know the oil has no "motor honey" added.
Have a mechanic you can trust listen to it. -or-
Have the seller warranty it for 50 hours. 50-50?
Is it dealer or private sale? Can you lease with option to buy? Why is seller selling? -or-
Do nothing, buy it, take chance. If you do have to do a rebuild at least you get a "new" motor, but you are prepared.

The kit checks for unusual internal
wear or damage by analyzing the oil for material from bearings, pistons, cylinders etc...

You send the sample in with $20 and they give
you a report on the metals/etc in the oil.

A lot of fleets use this for early detection
of internal engine problems.
