I am definatley a novice at this but just bought a 1080 at an auction and when I brought it home, put in a new battery and it fired up and ran on the first crank. I drove it around for about 5 minutes, shut it off and now nothing at all. I noticed after the fact that the pushbutton starter was hot and when I pulled the choke to kill, it didn't want to die. Both my batteries were dead and I recharged, still nothing. I am measuring 12 volts accross the solanoid but it won't crank. I am worried that I might have burned up the starter. Any thoughts.

Thanks for the help,

Hey Greg,
Sounds like you do have a short somewhere. I am assuming you have a diesel from your description. I was having problems last year with my 3020 John Deere with the batteries going down, turned out to be a short in the starter. I will be converting it from the 24 volt system to 12 volt in a week or so, just as a note your massey should be a 12 volt system I'm pretty sure. Don't really know that much about the massey wiring but if your pushbutton switch was getting hot it could be the starter didn't disengage and kept pulling current from the batteries adn of course that would heat up the pushbutton as well. Let me know how you make out on this, maybe we can both learn some things together.

have you checked your netural safety switch? check to see if the wire going from the key to the netural safety to the soleniod is getting fire to the soleniod when the key is turned. Check to see if a hot cable is grounded against the frame somewhere or the alt. has a draw on it. The key switch might have burned up causing the no start as well as the heat at the switch. Check the ground cable as well. If these dont help, have the starter checked, as these are free if you do the work yourself as well as getting some experiance that will come in handy later.
