Hi. I am currently looking at purchasing a 1963 MF65 diesal. I dont have any experience with tractors so its all a bit new to me. I have had a good look over the tractor and went through a number of 'check lists'that I found on the Intranet. It passed all tests with flying clours execpt for the brakes. When applying the brakes to one wheel only I understand that the wheel should lock up. We couldnt get it to lock. Does that indicate a problem? I heard that the MF65 brakes were not all that good from new.

If it is a problem, are they adjustable? Are they expensive to fix?

The clock shows 4200 hours. However I noticed that the tacho isnt working. Does that also mean that the hour clock isnt working?

Also, is the MF65 generally a good tractor for a beginner?

And advice will be most welome.

Thanks, Stuart

Stuart:

I own a MF 65 - 1963. Have had it about 1 year. Good tractor for a beginner. Easy to work on.

If the tach isnt working then the hourmeter will not be also.

I have replaced the brakes on my tractor just recently. The brakes for this tractor are good.
One thing to watch for is the seals around the rear axle. If they leak the brakes will get transmission fluid on and will leak. once they get fluid on them they are bad news because they will stick. To replace them u have to remove the rear axle assembly and its not easy to do.

The brakes should never lock as you describe in your message they should only drag to stop the tractor. If they lock u are in trouble and that is a bad sign of trouble ahead. If they lock when u are driving it would throw u from the tractor... not a good thought indeed.

You dont say how much this tractor costs but my experience with this tractor indicates that the max cost should be no more than $3,500 in good condition. 4200 hours is a lot without an engine overhaul. Mine has 2700 hours on it without a major overhaul.

Hope this helps u out.

I have a MF-65 and want to check/replace the brakes...it gets a little scary going down a hill. I am tearing it apart to repaint having had the engine and clutch rebuilt last year. I really would like to talk to someone about replacing the brakes. I have a tech manual, but want a little coaching too. I think this is a good opportunity to do this while it is broken down so to speak. Please respond at my email. Thanks.
