A while back, I bought an old 44 RC gas in a field of trash and junk for $165. It had been sitting stuck for years.I took the motor apart and honed and honed and honed. I relapped the valves with grinding compound and my electric drill. I meticulously pecked at the rings til I got almost all of them off with out breaking.I replaced those with a few used ones from an M. I then rebuilt the carb with stuff I had laying around.I turned all the engine bearings over so the best sides were taking the force. Pop thought I was nuts for putting so many hours into something and using old parts. I got the biggest kick out of having it hit and really run smooth on the 1st try. It smokes a little under a load, but she still has a little life in her. Am I alone in doing a restore this way? Does any one else get a kick out of using all the original stuff to make one come back to life?

Hey, you are a true restorer. I've always thought that in places like Poland or Brazil, farmers don't run down to the local NAPA and get the correct new parts all the time, they make the old ones useable or else use something else. I had an old Massey Harris (my first tractor restoration) 101 Junior that had 2 pistons stuck and the compression rings were totalled by the time I got them out, BUT I used VW compression rings as replacements and they worked great. I think I paid $5 for the rings for the two pistons that were stuck. Tractor still runs good.
