A friend of mine just bought a MF35. The tag under the gauges is gone. Is there another place to find the serial number so we can determine the year and whether it has a Continental or Perkins engine.

Ron, First if its a 4 cyl it is a gas engine.

If it is CONTINENTAL it will have CWC on block below the distributor

MINI HISTORY LESSON about CWC: I lived down road from the CWC Foundary and the Continental Motor Company in Muskegon Mi. CWC (now owned by TEXTRON) was a foundary that started making castings for boat motors when boat motors were first invented. Then they branched out with other contracts and got into many other castings. One being these tractor castings for Continental Motors who is also in Muskegon. CWC...(Cannon Wye Cannon ) had a son or granson named Harold Cannon. In the early 70s Harrold designed the famous DOWNRIGGER that he patented. If you are a fisherman with a boat you know what these are. They look like a little pole with a 8" spool on back and they stick out off of the back of your boat. These have a cannon ball weight of about 10 pounds to hold your line from 5 to 200' deep as you troll. Catch a trout and the line is released and floats up so you can reel in the catch. Now..... ...History class is over. News FLASH..... about 12 years ago some crazy employee of the CWC foundary found out his wife was leaving him. He told her she would never take his sons too. The sick bastard put the 2 little boys in one of the furnaces at the foundary and turned it on. They were rescued just minutes too late to be helped. Sorry ...just had to clear my mind of that. If your friends tractor is MF RED body and grey engine it is at least newer than Aug 31, 1959. (First MF35s were built on this date). 1959 is also the year that they quit using the Standard 23c engine 3 cyl gas and started the Perkins 3 cyl Diesel. If it is :
4 cyl gas its Continental Z-134 32.8 hp
3 cyl gas its Perkins (rare find...no info)
3 cyl diesel its Perkins 3-152 engine 35 hp
4 cyl gas but not Contintal then this is not a MF but an older Ferguson so it should not be Red Body unles someone painted it. MICRO History lesson: Continental made many years of TANK engines for the military. Two kids were playing oneday on the Continental test track in Muskegon when a tank came throu the woods and ran over one of the boys. Wooded area is fenced in but you know how it is being a boy and climbing fences...thats what fences are for ...right? Continental missed out getting the Army contract bid for the Humvee. I helped to stuff brochures for their version of the Humvee. These classified brochures were sent to many military sites. Friend of mine worked for printshop that made brochures for Continental and we helped to do large envelope stuff jobs sometimes after church. Pretty neat vehicle even though they lost the bid.

Well now that your probably boared to death...check out this page for a nice PRINTABLE brochure for the FORD/FERGUSON/MF that you can carry in your truck. I have these things printed all over. When I need infor I grab one. Thast where I got some of the info I told you here. www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/9828/

Good Luck..... ...Class Dismissed.... Vic S.

Continental gas should have a name tag on the left side of the block. Would have four cylinders, Perkins gas and diesel were 3 cylinders. And both were used.

Is it gas or diesel? A Perkins diesel has 3 Cylinders, Standard has 4, Continental I believe would only be gas.

Maybe you could use the engine numbers, and check with a dealer.
