I am looking at a 50 diesel and it looks like a fair tractor. I have two questions for you guys that are in the know. First, with the tractor running the power steering turns the wheels very easily (much better than my 90), but when you turn the wheels to the right all the way to the stop, the steering gets very hard when you go back to the left until the wheels get almost straight. After that, they turn to the left very easily and back to the right also. What is the likely problem, and how hard/expensive is it going to be to fix it. Second, the tractor has some blue smoke coming from the exhaust when it is running at lower rpm. At higher rpm the exhaust seems to clear up. My 90 does this as well, but I am thinking it needs rings. The man selling this 50 tells me it is just the air cleaner (oil bath) needing service. Thanks for the help.

Hi Greg,
First problem - power steering...
The first thing I would check is alignment. Make sure it's not binding due to too much toe-out.
More likely due to sticky valves inside power steering housing. I used to see a similar problem with mid 80's GM cars where the power steering would "freeze" if the wheel was turned suddenly and then clear up. Sort of like yours hitting the stop increasing the internal pressure momentarilly locking the valve. I found a cheap and easy fix for this problem by using an additive called "Morrey's Oil Stabilizer" which is thick as honey and can be added to almost anything. It goes by a new name now and I'll have to get back to you with the name. What this does anyways is to increase the pump output pressure compensating for the sticky valves. I've found this to work very well and seems to be a "permanent fix". I say "seems" because I've never had to go back and repair the powersteering units I used this on.

As for the blue smoke problem...
After thinking about this, I would definatly check air cleaner first. Diesels need as much air as they can get and any restriction with air causes them to run rich and this will be most obvious at idle. Other areas where oil would be introduced such as rings would cause more smoke at higher rpm's. Leaky valve guides would cause it to smoke when first started and rarely seen on a diesel due to the fact that the fuel is a lubricant extending the life of the valve train. Another possible area is the head gasket and a leak would have to be between a pressurized oil channel and a cylinder - not to likely but you could try re-torqueing the head bolts. A real good possibility is a leaking injector and looking over all possibilities, I'd guess this is the problem.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Mike C

Thanks Mike. I'm clueless as to the power steering, the steering on my Super 90 is completely different and doesn't have as much linkage and doodads as the 50. So you've given me a good place to start. As for the smoke, I've thought of several possibilities. I'll just have to start troubleshooting and I'll eventually find the problem.
