I found a Massey FE35 with a Standard 23C diesel engine. I haven't seen the tractor yet, but the guy tells me that it has 0 hours on complete engine overhaul and new paint. From what I hear, the 3 cyl. diesel is the better one, but they are very hard to find. Is there such thing as a Standard 23C diesel? What should I offer for a price? From Canada.

Yes,there is a Standard Diesel in the 35's,they were not a terribly bad engine, they were just much harder to start than the perkins.they use four glowplugs, and it needs them to get going. If one fails, none of them work,to replace one costs around $60cdn,if i remember correctly, this was 5 years or so ago.As for value,it seems this engine is around cdn$1500-2000 less than a perkins in similar shape.A perkins isn't all that hard to find.

The Standard is a good, reliable engine. A bit less power than the Perkins 3 cyl, but lots of lugging power. Ours had probably 5000 hours when I overhauled, and the crank was still standard size.

The hard starting can be cured with a 200-300 watt block heater in the lower rad hose. 15 min in summer, an hour in winter.

If it starts at zero c now, it's ok.

We sold ours a year ago for $3400. Replaced it with a 135 w/loader which needed a major overhaul, for $2000. (Overhaul cost $1500 parts and machine shop - did most of the work ourselves.)

The 35 is one of the best tractors in its size ever built. The Perkins 3 cyl is the best engine in them. Overhaul kit is half to 2/3 the cost of most others - probably because there are so many around.

Might be worth waiting for one of them.

Enjoy - whichever way you go!
