Im stumped! Got a m-h 44 that coughs & skips under load ( just pulling itself up a small grade.) Motor has 4" bore ( either a upgrade or 44 special motor, gas.)New rings, valve job, carb cleaned, plugs, wires, cap, the whole works. Is it fuel adjustment, could the valve lash be set wrong? I've tried timing and carb. adjustment but nothing seems to work.

Have replaced points, coil, wires, condenser, cap. The strange thing is that if pulling a light load (brush hog ) if I put my foot on the brakes to add load it pulls like a brute. Idles and no load fast idle is fine no miss.

The mystery is solved! There was a deep jet in the carb. that was missing! I found out by mistake looking at a old zenith carb. that was in a box of parts I got with the tractor.I put the jet in the empt hole in the other carb and presto! No more cough. Thank you to all who replied. At least now I know the all the ignition system, valves, and intake are in good shape!

Check to see if you have a leak in the manifold. Happened to me once and I took starting fluid and sprayed around the manifold and you could tell that air was getting in.
