Is there a code for what the different model numbers mean? I'm gathering the 285 is 80'ish HP and likewise the 135 and such. Is the "xx" , "1xx" and "2xx" designation for different decades, even if loosely translated? What do the 4X models have as designations? Sure would like the 285 at the local store! Really leaning to a MF as the prefered brand, JD second. Just something about them, ???.

The 285 you are looking at has 81.95 HP Link A good rule of thumb for the older Masseys is take the last 2 or 3 #'s of the model # subtract 5 from it and that will give you a good ball park figure for the HP. Can't say anything good or bad about the 285 have the same engine in a 1080 and is easy on fuel and reliable could use a few more ponies though. Hope this helps. Merle

"A little more" hp?! Geez, I wish I could upgrade THAT far! It's really is out of my ball park, at least for several years. Seems like overkill for 30 acres of hay.
