The patient : MF35 perkins diesel
The symptoms : Excessive smoke and oil consumption; funny noises.

I pulled the head today. Someone told me it could be a busted piston. The tops of the pistons look ok but there is a significant ridge in all 3 sleeves. The service book I have says to replace sleeves that have a slight ridge on them. Does everyone agree with that? Also when I idle it down real slow there is a dind ding ding noise. It sounds like a bell ringing. Could this be the pistons slapping? Thanks for any help.

Terry

Hello Terry -

Oil consumption and blow-by is a good indicator of ring and sleeve wear.

An overhaul is warranted! The Perkins is the cheapest engine of all for parts, and once complete, will be good for several thousand hours.

The ringing is a new one to me - sounds like something external - something as simple as a loose washer flopping with the extra vibration at idle.
