I ran out of fuel and now I'm having a hard time restarting the engine. Any ideas? It's a MF165 diesel.

Have fun and a strong battery. Seriously, its not too hard to bleed the fuel system, but it is messy and time consuming. Start by bleeding the fuel filters by loosing the drain bolt on top of each one. Bleed the first one first and BE SURE that all the air is out of it. Often you think the filters are bled when they aren't. Next there is a bleeder screw on the side of the pump. This is a small bolt that when you loosen it, fuel will flow out. Again, be sure that ALL air is out. Some of these tractors have hand pumps on the transfer pump and you should use this until you get fuel to the injecor pump. I am never patient enough to do this, so I spin the engine with the starter. Here you need the strong battery and be careful not to over heat the starter. A weak battery will over heat the starter real quick. After getting fuel to the injector pump, loosen 2 of the injector lines at the injectors, turn on the fuel, pull the throttle wide open, and spin the engine until it cranks. There will be fuel and air blowing from the lines when you are cranking, but it will crank on 2 and run. Once it cranks, idle down and tighten the other 2 lines and you have it. Be careful not to get fuel in the eyes or let it blow directly on your hand. Lastly, clean up the mess, cause you are probably going to make one. All of this is explained better in the IT manual and the MF service manual. If you have any questions, email me. Moye

PS Please do not try to crank using ether or starting fluid.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I will try the recommended procedure later today and get back to you if I fail. Of course its minus 20 degrees C here today. I would never have this problem if it was mild out.

If it is that cold, why worry? I'll just throw another log on the fire and tomorrow it will be better. It was 73 here yesterday. Only got up to 65 today. O well, maybe tomorrow will be better. :) Moye
