I have a MH 33 that is running very rough. I think it has something to do with the fuel. In warm weather the intake manifold sweats real bad. This turns to frost in colder weather. Anyone have any ideas what would cause this?

Sounds like it is icing up, the result is a loss of power and high fuel consumption. Intake air flow has a cooling effect on the carb/manifold, it reguires heat from the exaust to compensate. intake and exhaust runners are joined together to allow heat transfer.

possible causes 1)Tired engines have less heat in the exhaust.
2) cracked manifold or leaking gaskets 3)Incorect ignition timing or the engine operating at low coolant tempature 4)combined with the above, A lean air/fuel mixture can cause icing.

Thanks Winston

I think you told me what I need to know. I rebuilt the engine but the thermostat was bad. I ordered one but they never got it on the list somehow. The guy at the parts store said I didn't really need one. I think he was wrong. I don't know why that it never occured to me before but the coolant is probably circulating so fast that the engine is really cool and so is the I&E manifold. So could probably add bad or no thermostat to list too. Thanks very much.

I have a 33 massey that I run without a thermostat. In the winter I also have a frost problem. What I was told is it don't matter thermostat or not, It will frost up. SOLUTION: Tie a rag near the bottom of mainfold, near carburetor. I'm not saying this is the right way to fix it, but it worked for me.
