I have an opportunity to buy an old Massey Harris
tractor. It appears to be four wheel drive, has 4
large axle castings with large final drives. I've seen one of these in a calendar that was painted yellow and red but the one I'm looking at is painted like an Oliver, green with red wheels. What is this critter and should it be green?

I think you're looking at a MH GP (for General Purpose). It came out in about 1930 (according to one book here) and was the first MH tractor designed from within the company itself. It had a Hercules engine of 226 cubic inches. It was tested at Nebraska, test #177 and #191. Apparently it was hazardous backing up downhill or backing out of a ditch since the rear of the tractor tended to rear up in those circumstances. I've seen them in MH red/yellow and also some other color (in magazines) that I just can't remember so maybe you're looking at one of the earlier ones. Another book I have hear says they were made form '36 - '38 so that contradicts the other book. I'd say it's a pretty rare beast, never seen one at any shows, only in books and magazines.

My collector friends have the 4 wheel drive Massey Harris that came out of MAPLE LEAF GARDENS in Toronto. It was used to scrape the ice out so the floor could be used for other functions. It is a 1937 model and was sold by the Gardens in 1960. A worker at the gardens bought the tractor and moved it to his home north of Toronto. My friend saw it advertised in the paper in the 1980's and phoned and bought it sight unseen, hauled up the next Saturday and brought it home. They (Orland and Ken Reichert well known Massey collectors in southern Ontario) have three of these one is painted Massey Harris red with yellow wheels, the other is green with red wheels and the third is grey with red wheels...go figure!!! and all are rare so don't let it slip away...Alberta Mike how are you?....Mike in Exeter Ontario
