I just had the head rebuilt on my 65 and have put it back together. The tractor had sat for a number of years and was not running when i got it. How do I set the timing. When I attempted to start it, it will fire, but will not continue to run and acts like it might be out of time? I am also unsure of the firing order and in what place which spark plug wire goes. I did not take the tractor apart, (yes a basket case for a shade tree mechanic!). I am close, just need a little help!

You didnt say if your tractor is gasoline or diesel. But if it is gasoline try the following:

The firing order for the G-176 gas engine is 1,3,4,2. The number 1 cylinder is located at the front end of the tractor. You should be able to figure out which wire goes from the distributor cap to each cylinder with this information. I dont remember which way the distributor turns (clockwise or counter clockwise). You can remove the distributor cap, turn the engine over and watch the direction. Then place the wires in their respective locations on the distributor and engine.

I doubt that you will have to set the timing. I hope that this help you out.

Thanks Mike, that is what I did. I have done it hundreds of times on cars, but for some reason my brain was not working on this tractor. I still have not figured out the timing though.
