think I might have messed up buying this tractor,, bought what appeared to be a good working tractor from a sale... It is a mf 175, with diesel.. every thing appeared to be in working order,,started and ran smooth,,, with no smoke, lift worked, pto turned,,, but when I hooked up my mower and put into grass the pto stoped turning,, can only get slow turning speed, with no power,,, NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET,, AS TO WHAT IS WRONG AND BEST WAY TO GO ABOUT GETTING IT FIXED,, or would it be best to just carry the tractor to another sale and unload it

is the pto not holding

the clutch is slipping?....under the bell housing is a plate with 3 bolts in it.....in behind that is the pto clutch..... ..may need adjusting....

i think its similar to the 165..... problem is i don't remember how

they are often neglected because they are hard to get to (ie loaders on the front often took up the holes as cross member supports

maynot help..... mayhelp..... ..just a thought

i have never worked with a 175 myself

Weasel, I don't know how familiar you are with this 175, but there are three positions on the live power version all the way back is engine speed all the way foward is ground speed and in between is off. If you don't have the engine speed portion of this PTO you might start with a good look at the travel of the lever. ( at times I would almost have to stand on the clutch to get it fully depressed before I could engage the PTO) Try a hard pull backwards on your PTO shifter with clutch fully depressed. Good luck

What is the difference between ground PTO, and engine PTO? And how do they affect the performance of, say a mower (bushog)?

as the name suggests, with ground pto the speed at wich you pto-shaft turns depends on how fast your tractor is going over ground, regardless of how high your engine is revving.engine-pto is directly related to engine speed, regardless of how fast or slow the tractor is travelling.soo, you cannot run a bushhog or a mower with the ground pto,in fact i have never found a use for ground pto on my MF50.hope this helps a little.

Most guys in my area use the ground drive PTO with a 3PT hitch hay rake.

The ground position on the PTO lever causes the equipment to function at a speed relative to the movement (speed) of the tractor. When you stop, the PTO stops. The engine position causes the equipment to function at a steady speed based on the tractors engine's RPM. In other words, when you are stopped and the clutch is engaged, the equipment continues to function. Hope I have helped.
