The slide thing hooked up to the trip wheel is a mechanism that allows the mouldboards to ride at the same height above the ground irregardless of the depth that the plow is set to plow at when in the ground. This feature belongs to a Massey Harris #28 plow. I have a wreck of one.

I have a 2 bottom on rubber #28. looking toward
the tractor on the left wheel there is a trip rod
with a string attached to it to go to the driver.
When it's pulled, it grabs a cog in the axle on that side that raises the frame that raises the boards. When you've done the circuit and ready to drop the boards you pull the cord again and releases the cog and down she goes. The sTrange looking hitch setup with the double spring is required for release when you hit
something. I was going to hook it up straight when my neighbour told me what it's for. I've just restored mine I got for 40$ from a farmer. I've been passing it on the road for years
and watched nature grow up around it. Finally I had to save it so the farmer gave me a goofd price. The trailing board was broke when he hit a gobble and never touched it since. Lucky he saved the broken piece. I welded the board and with a can of wd40,grease and crankcase oil I set about rebuilding. Everything works but haven't plowed with it yet. I've heard this type of plow was the best that
were ever produced, even better than 3ph.

Hi,I was wondering if you could tell me how to identify what model Massey plow I have? It's a 2 bottom on rubber, with a metal trailing wheel. It plows great, although the spring hitch is missing.I need to identify it so I can find the spring hitch somewhere.Any help would be great BillJ

Does it carry the rear wheel? If it does, it is a #27 plow.

Thanks for the help.Yes,it has a metal wheel attatched to the end of the frame that rolls along in the furrow. When were these made? What color should it be?Are parts available for it or is it boneyard parts only? I used it this fall behind my Super H Farmall and it was the best plow I have ever used!Smooth furrows, scoured fast.it hadn't been used in forever and didn't want to drop in the ground at first but after a few rounds it limbered up.Thanks again,BillJ

I have only seen one Massey Harris #27 plow in a salvage yard. It was not for sale though. I would say that your best bet for parts would be to drive the back roads and find another one. As for painting the plow, we painted everything MH red except the hubs/spokes/rims, we painted the MH yellow. Ours was still in good enough condition, that we could still make out the original paint. You can not find decals though.

My model is barely visible in painted white military writing on the support arm (I beam)
just above the boards. The boards are marked this way too in the back. Considering we're talking
late 30's early forties it's remarkable. The boards are #23. I always wondered why the plow was green
but apparently MH changed their color from a darker green to red way back. Sounds like you got a 28. You might want to consider putting a shear pin arrangement if you can't find the mechanism. My rims are about finished and I may need to
chop them off at the spokes and weld on some modern ones. My problem is that they have good implement tires on them of size 6 X 16, I'll have a job finding narrow rims like that.
