I have an MF35 with a Z134 Continental gas engine. It was misfiring.I replaced pts.,coil etc. The misfiring continued but was runable until recently. While plowing,it began to "skip" worse until it was barely running. Now it will not start at all. It"s getting fire, but acts like the timing is off.Despite adjusting distributor,it acts the same.It has timing gears, not a chain, but I was wandering about possible distributor problems.I appreciate earlier misfire suggestions, but now would appreciate any help with this more severe trouble. Thanks,RB in Carolina

Be sure the plug wires are in the right order. It's easy to wind up with a John Deere if you are engrossed with some other problem and get a couple out of sequence.

I have checked my compression on my cylinders(80-85 psi on each cylinder)and feel like the valves are ok.When trying to crank it still sounds like timing is way off.In regards to spark plug wires,I have switched dist.caps a couple of times. Is there a way to know the correct spark plug wire hookup? Thanks,RB in Carolina

The link to the tune up specs on bottom of this web page will lead you to the firing order and plug gap, etc that you should have.

Number 1 cyl is the one closest to the radiator.
I forget the direction of rotation of the rotor, but bumping the engine over will show that when the cap is off.

A timing light may help after you get it running. There should be a removable plug in the bellhousing, sort of in line with the distributor. The timing marks should be visible (sort of anyway) when its removed and the timing light is aimed at it.

The distributor should have a centrifugal advance. When I got ours, the springs were gone and the timing was flopping all over the place.
It ran and idled a lot better when they were replaced and the timing was set right.

I'm ashamed to admit it,but I had the spark plug wires crossed. It's back to "skipping" some, but at least it"s cranking good and running again.I'm going to recheck ignition system and possible leaky manifold gasket.
Thanks to everyone for help so far,

While changing plugs one night I managed to interchange 2 and 3. This was all the more galling because I had earlier labeled them all.

I would be sure that you don't have some sort of intermittent short or break of some type. You might also check the valve lash. And be sure the fuel system is nice and clean.

It has been my experience that electrical stuff either works or it don't. The fuel side can sort of work, or work some of the time.

Hang in there, a good running Massey is a worthy goal.

Check that the lash caps on top of the valves have not come off.Things may not be getting enough oil either. I have also seen the condenser make one barely run only with the choke on.New parts can be bad sometimes.
Good Luck

Check the valves. I had an adjuster come loose and it acted like that.
