MF-135, 240 or 245?

Am considering buying a used MF-135, 240 or 245 from a local dealer who specializes in fixing-up Canadian tractors. I know a little bit about the main differences, but would like advice on which may be the best buy for my needs.

I want it for mainly clearing and brush-hogging, plus some minor road grading. I'm mechanically inclined, so working on is no problem. The dealer wants top dollar for each, with the 1984 MF-245 going for $2,000 more than the 1974 MF-135 and the 1991 MF-240 $400 above that. All are diesel.

Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Craig I've run a 245 for a lot of hours(as a loader tractor) and it was a very tough unit for it's size. The 245 was an upgrade of a 235 (which we also had) and had a much stronger front end and steering system. Our 235 puked it's steering gearbox 3 times in 3 years which is why we upgraded. A 240 is an improved 235 but I am not sure whether it has the heavier frontend or not. Compare the two and go with the tougher unit as the rest of the driveline should be identical. Also ,which one has more hydraulics? Since there is only $400 difference between the 240 and 245 options should make up your mind for you. Given the difference in year it makes me think that the 245 is better equipped. Bigger tires? Powershift rims? Cast hubs? Shuttle shift? Options cost a fortune to add later. Our 245 had lots of guts as I could pull a 3x14" plow in clay soil with out a great deal of difficulty.Did make it snort a little through alfalfa roots though. Low hours plus lots of options equals good dollar value.

Jamie,
All I now so far is the 245 has about 600 less hours on it. I've seen the 240, but not the 245. The dealer is delivering the 245 tomorrow for me to use for awhile to check out. I used the 135 and was not satisfied, it just took me too long to cut through heavy brush. Thanks for your input.

Craig

I've got a 245... no real problems with it, (diesel)... been in the family since '70 something.

What size bush hog are you thinking about ? The 245 struggles with the 6 footer Ive got.. so the old 165 does duty there....

I'd consider all those tractors are 'medium duty' but within their limitations they are all good machines. If you need something for real heavy duty work you need to step up to the 165..75 etc.. or another brand.

good luck.

I'm currently using a 5-foot bush hog, although the dealer told me the 245 would push a 6-footer O.K. Thanks for your advice. A medium-duty tractor is fine for me right now. By the way, what other brand(s) do you recommend?

The North part of this county was most all Massey-Ferguson (due to dealer location)... the south half of the county is all John Deere... Most all my direct experience is with MF (though I've got a JD Backhoe)...

I'm quite partial to Perkins engines. Quiet, start easy. last long time. and much more fuel effecient than the JD... at least when my tractors were made (mostly 30 years ago...)

What do your neighbors have ? most everybody made good models (and a few bad ones) probably more important is what kind of support you can get in your neighborhood.

All my neighbors have compact Kubota tractors, so I can't ask them these kind of questions.

I have a 1972 model MF 135 diesel. I use it with a 5 ft bush hog, 5 ft scrape blade,20 disc smoothing harrow, 7 shank all purpose plow, single shank sub soiler. At times you must regulate your speed/depth to avoid overloading the 135. But, I wouldnt trade mine for either of the other models you mention. You will love the lower profile( if it has under side exhaust) and the great fuel effiecency of the 135.

I didn't like the low level exhaust igniting corn stalks as I used a flail mower to chop corn or pulled a disk through corn stalks or plowed corn stalks. I just don't like the idea of igniting the field while I'm in the middle of it!
