Hello, Craig - Sounds like you have the Standard 23C engine. Exhaust on the right side, yes? Perkins exhaust is on the left, and the Perkins are 3 cyl in those units. We've had that black guck with prolonged low rpm operation - condensation, and the exhaust doesn't get hot enough to vaporize it. You do have a leaking gasket, or perhaps no gasket at all. If you get fumes when operating, might be a good idea to repair it because exhaust fumes aren't really healthy. Probably no worse than the pipe I smoke, though (grin)! If you have the deposit with heavier running - harrowing, plowing, bush hogging - it may indicate worn pistons, sleeves and rings: high oil consumption (a quart to a tank of fuel is high), blow-by, and blowing oil out the exhaust. If this is the case you will also see a lot of smoke/vapor coming out the bottom of the crankcase breather pipe, and likely oil dripping from it. And sometime in the next 1000 hours or so you'll need new sleeves and pistons. As long as it has enough compression to start, just keep on truckin', and keep the oil level up! Great tractors! Hope this helps. And Merry Christmas!
