MF35 annoying starting problem

Our MF35 (3cyl Perkins Diesel) has always been a good starter, but has now developed an annoying starting problem. As soon as the engine tries to fire, it throws the starter pinion out. Normally the engine gives a couple of "coughs" before firing properly, now the starter disengages at the first cough. The engine seems normal, starts up readily enough once the starter gives it a chance.

Where should I start looking to sort this out?

Thanks in advance, Tony S

Thanks for all suggestions. Took the starter apart to check/replace the drive unit. Turns out that the rest is pretty well shagged, commutator damaged, signs of scorching etc. I can get a Lucas factory reconditioned unit, ex-stock and reasonably priced. No point in replacing just the drive if the rest of the start motor's on its way out. Teeth on the flywheel look pretty good, as far as I can see. Here's hoping.

I think that your problem is in the starter itself or the ring of teeth on the flywheel consult a starter repair man

Tony, the starter drive is most likley the culprit, and it is easy to change, remove the starter and then the 2 bolts on the large end of the starter, where the brushes are, it is self explanitory from there, the drive is available alone but inspect the rest of the starter and repair as needed, Good luck

Sorry to be obtuse, but is the starter drive a separate, replaceble part of the starter motor? My I&T service manual doesn't give any data on the starter motor except how to remove and refit it.

The starter drive is the gear in the end of the starter. It has an over running clutch in it to allow engine to start without spinning up the starter. I have an operators manual for the 35. Are you interested in a copy.

Thanks. I've got a UK operators manual specifically for my version (UK, Perkins etc), and the US IT service manual covering the family. Neither show any information about dismantling the starter, but it sounds straight-forward enough. I guess I should really get hold of a parts manual or something.
