I have a MF35 diesel. It smokes alot and uses ALOT of oil. I'm sure it needs re-ringed but I'd like to check the compression first. Is it possible to do this using a gauge similar to one for a gas engine? I know it doesn't have spark plug holes. How do you check the CR on a diesel engine? Thanks.

Terry

I have a FE 35 and I did a leak down test, which I like better than a compression test. I machined a dummy injector out of a piece of round stock, then plumb a valve into it and hook it up to an air line. You need to hold the cylinder you want to test at TDC on the compression stroke. This isn't always easy. I used a pipe wrench on the front loader pump drive shaft. Apply the air pressure slowly and listen at the intake, exhaust and crackcase. This will tell you how much leakage you have and where it is.

Warm it up, pull the injectors, and use a compression tester, remember to leave fuel lever in off position.

Make that a DIESEL compression tester. It bolts in place and has a lot higher pressure range.

Yes that's true, both diesels exceed 17:1 C/R, and opening pressures above 1500 PSI.
