I RECENTLY PURCHASED A MASSEY FERGUSON TRACTOR THAT I BELIEVE TO BE A MF-180 BUILT IN 1969, BUT I AM NOT SURE. IT HAS A 4 CYL. PERKINS DEISEL, 6 FORWARD SPEEDS,2 REVERSE,POWER STEERING WITH TILT, TELESCOPIC WHEEL,CATAGORY 2 THREE POINT HITCH AND AUXILLARY HYDS. THE SERIAL NUMBER TAKEN OFF OF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK APPEARS TO BE # 318UA14280. I AM LOOKING FOR ANY HELP IN IDENTIFYING THIS TRACTOR AND FOR A GOOD SOURCE FOR PARTS. I KNOW I WILL BE NEEDING A WATER PUMP, HEAD GASKET, REPAIR MANUAL AND POSSIBLY MORE. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Good morning.

Looks like a Perkins A4-318 engine. My Vapormatic book lists that engine used in the 285, 595 and 1080. The A4-318-2 engine was used in the 298 and 698. These are European models; other US model numbers may have used the same engines.

There should be a serial number plate somewhere on the unit - the earlier ones were located in front of your knees as you sat on the seat.

Parts should be available through this site, from YT or Walt's. Manuals are also listed, from the link at the top of the left column on this page. You will need the tractor model, though.

Canadian prices on parts may be lower because of the low Cdn dollar. For example, a water pump is $139-$166 US, depending on the tractor.

Hope this helps.

Jack

I need to find out what year my Massey Ferguson tractor is. My serial number is 9A 28539I.

I assume that it's between a 1980 - 1985 Model. This tractor is called a MF 230 Gas.

I am trying to sell this tractor and need to know what it's worth.

Thanks, Jim

I'VE CHECKED THE AREA AROUND THE DASH PANEL AND FLOOR, AND CAN'T SEEM TO FIND ANY HOLES WHERE A SERIAL NUMBER PLATE MY HAVE BEEN MOUNTED. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW , IS IF THE MANUFACTURERS EVER USED CASTING DATES ON ANY OF THE MAJOR COMPONENTS, AND IF SO WHERE AND HOW DO I READ THEM ? HOPEFULLY I WILL BE ABLE TO AT LEAST NAIL DOWN THE YEAR OF THE TRACTOR. ALSO WHAT IS THE MULTI-POWER LEVER ALL ABOUT, WHAT IS IT'S FUNCTION AND WHEN WOULD YOU USE IT? THANKS FOR ANY HELP. K-MAN

Just looked at my 180, the s/n plate is where he described it, on the casting below the steeringcolumn, held on by 4 rivets, about 12" above the floor. If the motor is a 318 Perkins then you most likely have the 1080 as the 180 has the A-4 236. Size should be on the motor plate that you got the s/n off.

On the multi-power, it is Massey's version of the TA. Hi/Lo powershift, use Hi on hills, as it locks motor direct to wheels. Good for speed changes on light pulls but not heavy enough to stand repeated use under heavy load (plowing, etc.)

For What It's Worth

FIRST OF ALL I WOULD LIKE TO THANK JACK AND STEVE FOR THEIR HELP. I WENT BACK AND CHECKED THE AREA OF THE DASH TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING COLUMN AND FOUND TWO SHEET METAL SCREWS AND TWO HOLES , I ASSUME THATS WHERE MY ID PLATE USED TO RESIDE. AS FOR THE ENGINE ID THERE IS A TAG ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD THAT STATES "PERKINS" 318-? THE REST HAS FADED TO THE POINT THAT I CAN NO LONGER READ IT.WHAT I GUESS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW NOW, IS WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 180 AND A 1080. I'VE BEEN TO SEVERAL BOOK STORES AND HAVE YET TO FIND A BOOK WITH ANY GOOD PICTURES OR DISCRIPTIONS OF THE 180, AND NOW IT MAY BE A 1080 ? WELL THANKS AGAIN K-MAN

I have in my grubby little paws _Massey Ferguson Tractors_ by Michael Williams. Most likely got it from Motorbooks International in Osceola WI.

Anyway on page 98 there is a picture of the 1080. Text says that it was added in between the 175/180 (62hp) and the 1100 (90+hp), at 80 hp. Not many 1080s around here to look at, but it looks like they put the 318 4cyl in the 1100 chassis (6cyl).

FWIW

I own a M-F unknown model and unknown yeara, but is estimated to to be a model 80? circa 1960. It has a plate on it that says it was manufactured in Coventry England and a number 82843. Can anyone tell me the year and mode? I need to order a carb rebuilt kit.

Hi.

As far as I know, there are no casting dates on the castings. Later motors had date codes in the serial number, but it did not appear in yours.

Can you find a tractor similar to yours for reference?

Or, post a picture and someone here will certainly help narrow it down!

Jack
