Recently rebuilt a 1973 MF135, replaced all (5) gauges with Stewart Warner brand, also replaced the wiring harness with "homemade unit". A black box (some type of 2"x3" isolation transformer?)was used in the orignal lighting circut. Does anyone know if I need this item, or what it is for that matter? As of today, everything seems to be working.

Thanks,
Tony.

Is that 2" x 3" box on the left side and a short distance from the ignition switch? It sounds like the voltage regulator. I pulled mine out when I switched from the stock generator to an internally regulated alternator.

About your tachometer... did you swap that out too and did you find an electronic tack to replace the mechanical tach that came standard?

That box near the starter switch sounds like the power source for the guage lighting (electro-luminesence or something like that). Probably wasn't working anyway. I removed mine and the wiring harness that went from it to all the gauges.
