Timing trouble

Recently the nose cone off my massey 50 starter broke. Pulling it out, no problem. Putting it back in PROBLEM. The starter, now longer, wouldn't
go in without first removing the distributor. I scribed a line on the outside of the distributor so I could reorient it when putting it
back on....very clever. What I didn't mark was the inside rotor position
thinking it was keyed in...it's not, not so clever. Instead it's on a helical gear. Oh well, best laid plans ect.... No problem I'll just find TDC, spot
the fly wheel and try to place the points at just opening. First off
my fly wheel has an inspection port but no marks. Ok I'll make a needle pointer in front
of the engine block above the crank shaft pully and mark the pully there
at TDC.

Ok heres the tricky part the distributor has several cam adjustments not to mention a screw in gear which has to be in the right notch to be set correctly.
After a day trying different positions the best I can get it to run is well advanced of where it should be ie.. it runs but the manifold is cherry red. I know it should be set at 5' and the timing light I had on it sais I'm about there
but I've just about run out of patience with the thing! SOoo Any ideas on how to get the proper gear alignment would be greatly appreciated. Oh and if you have the manual pages maybe you could fax them to me at (410)639-2616, I'd be happy to pay for the copies
and phone call. Let us pray that all our tractor troubles are fixed for Christmas. Happy Holidays!

Is it 5 degrees BTDC? I spoke to my local Massey
dealer's mechanic and thats what he told me, between 5 and 6 degrees. I recieved an e-mail saying it was more like 25 degrees but he needed to know the #'s off my carburetor to be sure. (still haven't cleaned enough gunk off it to read them yet). If anyone knows for sure I would sure appreciate their insite.
