Is a MF-180 a good machine?

I've recently heard about a MF-180 with front loader for sale (diesel, about 70 hp, going to work 100 acres for hay/alfalfa); it may not have power steering, though - the woman selling it isn't sure.

Would the lack of power steering be a major problem? Anyone know if they are good machines?

Thanks, Ron.

I like the 180 but don't know much about their faults. The diesels were economical to run. There was a gas version, too. I've never seen one. I imagine they were quite thirsty. Some folks liked the optional 12 speed Multi-Power transmissions, others didn't. Seems they are expensive to repair. One of the neighbors replaced his with an 8 speed.

For hilly operations I liked the non-Multi-Power tractors better because the engine held the tractor back when going downhill. The Multi-Power tractors would free wheel in the low range. Also, in my experience the brakes always had to be set whenever you parked the tractor. The transmission is not connected to the engine when it's shut off.

The 180s were comfortable, nice driving tractors and came with hydrostatic steering as standard equipment. I don't believe manual steering was ever an option. They also have tilt and telescoping steering wheels. The 150, 165, and 175 had mechanical steering with hydraulic assist.

Happy Thanksgiving!

On this size of tractor, I would think it would have powersteering! If not it could be not working and have to be repaired if possible!

With a loader I would think powersteering would be a must!

I have never used the 180 but I had a MF 165LP which was traded for a MF 255D! I would guess that this would be a good or even great tractor for 100 acres of hay!
