I was out grading some black dirt today and I seemed to get my tractor stuck in reverse! Low or high range doesn't matter. I tried rather firmly to try and pull it out but no go. Seems kind of halfway between reverse and 2nd.
Any one have any idea why and how to remedy this problem?
Thanks

The problem with the transmissions on most of these old Masseys can be handled if you shift SLOWLY!!! and DO NOT lift up on the gear leaver as you shift. Every time I get in a hurry or lift up on the gear lever, I cross gears or leave it in a gear. Maybe one day I'll learn. :) Moye

After I finally found how to fix mine, I can put up with it. Like a lot of other things, it never happens at a good time or place. The first time it happened, about 15 years ago, I let it set for about a month while trying to find someone local to rebild the transmission. A mechanic finnally told me what to do.

Never mind, I searched the archives today and found lots of info pertaining to my problem. Took me two trips to figure it out. First trip was for a look see through oil cover but nothing moved. Came back in and reread posts and then looked in service manual to see what I was looking for. It began to make sense what some of you were saying. Three shifting shafts, one for hi/low and two for forward/reverse. Went back out and looked again and noticed middle shaft was not lined up with other shaft. Regular screwdriver and moved it back into position. Went smoothly and VWELLA! all is well in massey land.
Thanks for this web site and my fellow experienced tractor owners.

Congrats on the MH50. We've had a very similar one since 1982, and for what we wanted it for (snow plowing, gardening, putting up a few hundred bales of horse hay every year) it's been great.

If you're gonna plow snow with it, you may want to get a set of chains for it. It'll make a very noticeable difference. Also, will help a lot for pulling cars, whatever out of snowbanks.

The gear shift problem rears its ugly head every year or two. I thought I was alone in the world with that problem until I found this board. Apparently this vintage of Massey's will do that. Nobody seems to have come up with a permanent fix, other than to replace parts.

I read with interest the article on MF50 stuck in reverse, and the re's. But, I feel I can add to it. First happened to me last summer w/ MF35, was bushhogging. Locked in first gear. Still had 1st. and 4th. Finished mowing with two gears. No kidding-how many of you did that the first time yours locked up? What seems to happen is I found that when I shifted from rev. to 3rd., I did it kinda quick. The low & rev. sliding fork kept on going as I jumped over into the 2nd & 3rd fork. Also I noticed that the 90wt in the transmission was a little low. Sliding shafts a little dry. Opened up the oil filler cap and put the middle fork back it the mid. position- push the clutch in and rock the tractor if it don't want to go and aok till the next time. Solution: (my idea as a mechanic-machinist) Keep the trans/differential full of the correct oil-checked w/ the 3point hitch raised all the way up and do not "speed shift", thats what causes the shifter fork to go too far. I keep a bent welding rod (heavy) to use if I get too careless. Happy thanksgiving from the Mung Factory. Fred Martin

Please explain your procedure of using the welding rod. I have a TO-35 and it got stuck in reverse this summer and I had a tree right behind me. I could not get it to come out of this at all and I finally had to take the bushhog off and cut around it and finally it just slide out of the gear I guess I was lucky that time. I would like to know the procedure because the law of odds are it will happen again. I also have a problem with my solenoid or my starter the tractor just makes a clicking sound when I turn the key. I tried to bypass the solenoid with a pair of pliers but it still want turn. The tractor will start if you push it off. Does this sound like the starter or something else? Please e-mail me back at l2p
