I know the firing order on the MH33 but nowhere can I confirm which is the #1 cylinder. If it is the rear (flywheel) end, I have the firing order set correctly. It does run this way. If, on the other hand, the #1 cylinder in on the front (fan) end of the engine, I apparently do not have the firing order set and when I set it this way, apparently I am using the wrong place on the distributer for #1 because it will not run. It seems to me that the front end cylinder would be #1. If so, where is the #1 hole on the distributer? Thanks.

I have a 333 which is the same as a 33, just a slight increase in piston bore and a bit of a jump in displacement. All Massey 4 cylinders had the same firing order (1-3-4-2) which you already know and they numbered from the front, no other way no matter what anyone else might say. Turn your engine over until the #1 cylinder is at top dead center. Both exhaust and intake valves on the #1 cylinder should have tappet clearance when it's at TDC (assuming your valves are set properly). Take the distributor cap off and see where the rotor is pointing to (one of the 4 locations). This will be the #1 location on the distributor cap. Then wire #3,4, and 2 in order going counter-clockwise from #1. This should do the trick. If you did it the way you described, by fluke you might be firing on 2, maybe even 3 cylinders (but I doubt that) and this is a possible explanation for the crappy performance. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks Mike. I guess I was looking at the trees instead of the forest and let it become more complicated then it should have. You can trouble-shoot for me any day!

i know on my 44-6 the #1 cylinder is in the front by the radiator and the distributor turns counter clock wise .
my dad is restoreing a 33 now that the motor was apart i will check with him and let you know
you might try and turn the motor with the dist. cap off and see which way it turns and put the #1 at frontand thr rotor cap should point at the motor.

Thanks for that. Already did that and it does turn counter clockwise. Using the top right hand hole in the distributer as #1 and the rear cylinder as #1 and the proper firing order out of the book (which is out in the shop or I'd tell you what it is) the tractor will run. But I still think the #1 cylinder would be at the front of the engine. When I hook the wires up any other way then this it won't run. Hooked up this way it runs but not as smooth as it should.
