How long does one usually have to leave the screw in block heater plug hooked up to warm a 65 hp MF up enough to start in about 20 degree temp.

One thing you might also consider is getting a heater blanket for your battery. Plug it in the same time that you plug the engine heater.

Lead acid batteries can lose half or more of their power going from 70F down to 20F or so. Warming them up can help spin that diesel a little better, and you may have noticed that helps get things going.

Hi Don -

Depends on a couple of factors - wattage of the heater, condition of the engine.

I presume it's a diesel?

Does it have a working preheater?

If the preheater is working, the engine has good compression (not burning oil) and the injectors are working ok, the 65 should start to about 10 F without the block heater.

A half hour with a 500 watt heater should have the block warm to the touch at 0 F. With that, it should start like new - again, if other systems are ok.

Hope this helps.

Jack

I have a MF 255D and anytime the temp is less than 40 degrees, I let my block heater work for at least 30 minutes! It starts with no problem and I think it saves stress on the battery!
