I just got a MF65 with a live pto. The main tractor clutch works fine but the pto clutch won't disengage. Is there an adjustment on this thing or is it stuck? If stuck, any ideas on how to release it?
Thanks, E. Allison

: Thanks, E. Allison I think you've figured this out already...But, the clutch arm has two holes in it for the clevis to attach. To utilize the clutch for the PTO you need to have the clevis in the hole nearest the front of the tractor. And as discussed in other messages you need to adjust the clutch peddle for play.

Hi.

Most likely out of adjustment. The two stage clutch releases it, and with either a bit of wear or too much free play on the pedal, it won't go down far enough to release.

The release shaft arm on the round rod coming out of the transmission should have 1/8" free play (clearance between arm and case). Adjust by loosening clamp bolt and rotating shaft with a rod in the hole. Make sure bolt is firmly retightened, or the adjustment will shift.

Next, put a 1" block on the step and push clutch down. PTO should stop as pedal hits the block. If not, adjust the short connecting rod until it does.

If that doesn't work, or the pedal is too high at rest, the adjusting screws on the pressure plate are next. Accessible through the 4-bolt plate under the bell housing. 3 cap screws with lock nuts in the clutch midway between the release fingers.

Book says .080-.090 clearance; we set to .055 - .060 for more consistent operation.

Make sure you have a tight fitting wrench well seated on the lock nuts before loosening. They are usually stiff, and if you strip the heads you'll have to split the tractor to finish the job!!!!!

Strongly recommend a service manual - we use the I&T manuals, available from our hosts for under $25. MF-19 covers the 65.

How did you make out with the steering?

Jack

Thanks for the help. I just got the I&T in the mail yesterday. I tried the clutch pedal adjustment and that did it. Pedal is sorta high so I may try the adjusting screws when I get a chance. The steering has a bad lower bushing in the steering pedistal
or what ever you call the thing. The grease fitting on the bottom of the sector shaft is plugged so this may be way the bushing is bad. I will fix this before I try any adjustments on the steering. I have a parts breakdown book on order. The local MF dealer is 30 mile away so I want to phone in the order and pick it up once. I really like the tractor. One more thing, It has 14.9X28 tires on adjustable rims, one has a little dribble of Calcium chloride from the valve stem, looks like fun to fix. Is there more than one rim size used? If so, how do I measure it for a replacement? Thanks! E. Allison

You know you have a ground PTO & engine PTO. One is up and one is down on your shifter on the left side of your tractor, Its not in the ground position is it ?
