I'm new to this forum and older tractors and recently inherited my father's 1961 MF65 diesel that has sat for a couple of years in the barn. I checked the fluids, drained the tank and added fresh fuel and charged the battery then it fired right up. However, the power steering seems to be harder turning one way than the other. I remember my dad mentioning that shortly before his declining health stopped him from using it. He also told me he had gotten a MF65 disc from a man named "Big Dean" full of advice and tips for working on his tractor but I've not been able to find it among his effects. I see where Mr Dean has passed so I guess getting another disc is impossible. Ive read here where the pins on the turnbuckle at the cylinder get worn and have enough slack to prevent it from working but they seem very tight on on both ends. The 2 steering tower sections (I think that's what it's called)connected to the cylinder have a little bit of play between them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and if anyone knows where to get another MF65 disc I would be very grateful.
Thanks

The "play" that you mentioned is necessary for the power steering to function. In fact, you may have to increase it a little to get the tractor to steer better. It allows the valve to be activated before the steering linkage turns the front wheels.

HiRosco, A common problem. Usually you can adjust the turnbuckle while the tractor is
running and balance out the steering. New pins would be good also. Good luck, Chuck

Thanks, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as I begin to maintain and use my "new" tractor. I do have one more now, I changed the oil and have run the tractor about 45 minutes looking at the steering and when I checked the oil level after that the new oil I just changed was black as coal. What could cause that?
Thanks
Ricky

You've got a good tractor there.

Look at the engine breather tube when it's running. If there's a lot of vapor, or it drips oil, then the rings are worn and you've got excessive combustion gasses blowing into the crankcase blackening the oil. But the truth of the matter is diesels blacken oil quickly anyway...If the tractor sat, you've probably got some rust and crud in the cylinders. Run it hard for 10 hours or so, change the oil and filter again. Chances are rings will seal better with use.

Thank y'all for the replies. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I attempt a Fall garden.
