What can you tell me about an MF 165, horsepower and years made? Is it generally a good tractor model? I am in need of a loader tractor to move round hay bales, and want something dependable, well made, easy to service and get parts for and cheapr than most Deeres. I prefer 40-50 hp range. My Ferg TO30 is too small. Any other ideas of a good trractor in this range?

165 is a great machine, IMHO One of the best mid-sized tractors of it's day.

But if a loader is a big part of your plans, you might consider something with more hydraulic capacity and a beefier front end.

Perkins Diesel - great engines, reliable, sips fuel.

Hydraulics - only has 4.4 GPM pump so it's slow.

Front end - really wasn't designed with a loader in mind. Don't plan on abusing it.

Multi-Power high/low tranny - make sure it works properly if it's equipped with one.

Above my 2cts worth.

I have a 1973 diesel rowcrop 165 with a Westendorf
quick attach loader. The 165 is 52 HP (diesel) and was manufactured between 1965 and 1974.

Parts have been relatively easy to obtain, either from the two MF dealers here in CT, or from Central Tractor.

I've been very pleased with my 165, but have three bits of advice:

1) Stay away from the gas version-it's a fuel hog.

2) Get a block heater if you live in a cold climate.

3) Check the front axle support (heavy casting bolted to the engine) for cracks and/or welds. If the tractor has had a loader and has been abused, this part can fail and new supports are expensive ($1K).

Good luck.
