MF wiring question (Big Dean?)

I'm trying to get my head round wiring using Big Dean's diagrams. "100 series Diesel Wiring Diagram". One thing doesn't make sense to me.

The drawing shows the alternator connecting to the "+" on the ammeter, the battery, lights, starter switch etc all connecting to the "-" side of the ammeter. Is this correct?

Imagine that the alternator's not charging (like mine!) but you're using the lights. Current flow from the battery to the lights wouldn't pass through the ammeter, so the ammeter will read zero while your battery runs down.

Please tell me if I'm misunderstanding, or should the lights etc be fed from the "+" side of the ammeter instead?

Thanks in advance, Tony S.

Here is the deal bud.
Trash the ammeter and put a voltmeter in. I have just done the conversion for the following reasons.
1.Ammeter wiring was burned at the ammeter
2.Ammeter was not working properly.
3.Voltmeter gives better info on battery condition, and you can see if the alternator is charging.
Mail me if you want to do the mod, it is VERY easy and you can get a quality aftermarket voltmeter that fits your panel from most auto shops

Tony I just took a look at the wiring diagrams you are absolutely right. I don't guess you would believe that is the only mistake I ever made would you. LOL I will have to correct that.

That's fine, thanks. Just took a peek behind the dash of my 50B and it's a real mess. Since none of the electrics work except the starter, I think I'm going to strip all the wiring out and start again. I've made a start my connecting the starter switch round the correct way, and running new cabling for the heater plug.

Mine doesn't have a switch on the oil pressure line. Is there any other way that they used to get power to instruments etc only while the engine was running?

Thanks again, Tony S
