I have a Ferguson TO-20 that I just picked up. It's a six volt system that is negative ground. Is this right? And what was original on these tractors? I thought all six volt systems were positive ground. The starter seems to be having trouble engaging the flywheel, like there might be something wrong with the bendix. I figured the previous owner might have made an accidental mistake and maybe the voltage regulator got polarized the other way and thats why the starter might be weak. Anyone with any suggestions would be very much appreciated. By the way...the tractor will start the way it is...it just won't start everytime because the starter isn't engaging the flywheel. Thanks.

I agree it sounds like a starter problem. Could be you've got a tooth or two missing on the ring gear, or the bendix isn't fully engaging every time. Make sure the electrical connections are bright and clean also.

The battery conections are correct(neg.ground). I suspect you have a starter proublem.
