Can anyone tell me how to change the alternator drive belt on an MF50 Loader/Backhoe? Clearly the belt goes around the crankshaft pulley. On this machine there's a shaft from this pulley to the hydraulic pump. I can disconnect this shaft (four bolts), but it appears only to rotate, not move clear of the pulley to let me get the belt around.

I can't believe the hydraulic pump has to come off to change this belt - removing the pump looks quite a major job.

It's a British MF50B, around 1975.

Thanks in advance, Tony S

Hi i own a 1971 mf 50 i just did a water pump belt etc. you have to remove the 4 bolts on the crank pulley, take off the front screen on the machine. The only way to split the shaft is to remove the 2 hydraulic pump bolts.them the pump and shaft will move forward.

Done it! It first looked as if I couldn't access the pump fixing bolts without taking all the hose fittings off. Following your comments here, I had another go and the pump can be _just_ moved enough to squeeze a belt through.

Thanks again, Tony.

Tony, the hydraulic pump shaft will move forward enough to remove and replace belt. It will be tight. Sometimes you may have to tap pump shaft to get it moving. If I can find it in the service manual I'll scan it and mail it to you. Jack

Tony I have a MF 40 Industrial yr 75 and have the same setup, if you are lucky enough to move the shaft forward ( I could not ) and replace the belt put a second belt on first out of the way so if it happens again you are set. If you have to remove the pump just take the 2 bolts out with a crows foot and move it forward. Good luck Tim.
