MH 23 Governor and Hydraulic Pump

As I am changing hoses to and from the hydraulic tank, I disconnected the pump. I also want to seal leaks around both it and the governor. A couple of questions pop up.

First, the engaging of the governor, does it matter? I mean, is it like a timing item which must be aligned, or simply engaged?

Secondly, how is the gear that drives these two items oiled? Is there oil moving through that cavity?

Last question, when re-installing, likely using RTV silicone, the adjustment permits adjustment of how much pressure is put on meshing the teeth? Any suggestions on this?

Thanks.

The governor on my MH30 is lubed by the engine oil system. The oil line that feeds to it has a connector that looks like any other brass flare tube connector except that it has a spring loaded ball shutoff in it that prevents oil from dripping out when there is no engine oil pressure present.

There is no special alignment on mine, just
mesh the gears then bolt on. One of the bolt holes for the pump has a swivel hole (elongated) to allow for in an out adjustment for gear mesh. I just adjust it for full contact (in) then back off just a hair to allow for a bit of play.

No problem putting the governor back on, anyway will do unless it's driving a magneto on the other side and then it must go on in the proper location. Most governors are oiled from the splash that reaches the timing gear on the camshaft. As far as the silicon, I'd only use it if a regular gasket was leaking badly. I find that stuff messay and somewhat ugly to look at, but some guys swear by it. I usually swear at it.

Thanks for the info. It has a coil, so that means no magneto I guess? I am working my way slowly from one end to the other. Biggest items so far has been fluids in desperate need of changing - real brown colours.

I'll make a cork gasket to seal it, and later on take the case off the timing gear so that I can seal that properly. It is likely that leakage is more from there than the gasket on the governor or the pump.

Thanks again.

Maybe hold off on the cork gasket - just a paper gasket is fine and a lot easier to cut, etc. Maybe use some Permatex gasket cement (non-hardening type) before you install it and it should be fine, same with the other gasket you mentioned.
