Ive got a full set of gears for a T20 but they are covered in surface rust i would like to clean them up with out using a wire brush as the shapes are complex and i dont want to damage the bearing journals and get grit every where. Does anyone know of a chemical pickle or whatever the commercial people use to remove this rust?

The solution that I use is Muriatic acid. This is swimming pool acid. This is the best rust remover that I have used and it is only about three buck a gallon. I use it undiluted and the rust will be completely disolved within a couple of minutes. If you dilute with water it works slower and gives you more control of the process. If the rust is deep, soak for about two minutes then wash in water then repeat. To use on sheet metal before painting, I spray it on with a high quality plastic spayer. The only drawback is that you MUST get this stuff removed from any cracks or crevices or from between mating parts. DO NOT FORGET AND LEAVE THE PART SOAKING. On complex parts, I soak, rinse, soak, high pressure/hotwater wash and then soak in diesel to preserve. Try it and you'll be impressed. Bob

Bob; I used to use it to clean the plaster on swiming pool when they were empty. Nice fumes back in the 60s you did not use a mask and I was 16 yrs. old with good lungs! The best part is when we sprayed Clorine later to whiten it up and the two would mix and produse a poison gas! Where was OSHA then?? It is good stuff, just protect your lungs when you use it! Why work when you don't have to?
Check out the postings for electrolytic rust removal on the restoration board. Plenty of information there.

Just soak them in a solution of white vinegar and table salt for about 3 days, the rust will wipe off, then just oil them down and your good to go!Cheap Too!!!
