Front end loader? Gotta have one?

I know this question is relative to the work a tractor is used for, but does a guy need a front end loader on a tractor? I bought my tractor to maintain 40 acres with, mostly brush hogging, and wonder if a FEL comes in useful for more than I know. I've heard guys say they'd rather have their arm removed than be without theirs. Of course what this question is really saying is I don't have a FEL on my Massey and wonder what I might be missing. What do you think?

I have heard you guys talk about Rear end loaders, can someone send me a picture of one for a MF35 tractor or similar? I have never seen one and it could be the thing for me.

Two things nobody else mentioned:

If you carry the bucket just above the ground when you are brush-hogging, it will keep you from running over hidden stumps, rocks, etc. The sudden stop isn't fun, but it beats getting hung up, or feeding something nasty to your mower. It also pushes small trees and brush over so the mower can cut them.

The other important thing is using the power bucket tilt to push yourself backwards out of a mudhole. Roll the bucket down all the way, put down pressure on the boom, then try to back up while you roll the bucket up again. Besides the actual pushing effect, this also puts more weight on the rear wheels, and jacks the front wheels out of whatever hole they have dropped into. You can also bury the tractor pretty deep if you continue to try this after it is obvious that it won't work.

I have a rear pond scoop only, its not as good as a rear scoop(it only hauls abt a wheelbarrow load) but its indespensible when hauling dirt rocks etc.

One BIG consideration is Power steering. If you have it great but with no power steering my Farmall steers like my Cessna, fly a nice big pattern. Thats empty, full its a beast at best. I use it for nothing but the bucket which is why I bought it in the first place. When it comes to EVERYTHING else the TO-20 runs circles around the thing literally. The other thing is down pressure, if you don't have it you simply can't dig unless you are working from a fresh pile, the bucket skips right off. I don't have that either and it sucks. You can add 2 way cylinders and a new quadrant to the old type but thats another $150 minimum. I am thinking about making up a rear bucket myself as I have heard they are pretty handy on the 3 pt for digging. They are pretty cheap to buy as well. I guess what I am saying is to look around and test out something similar to your rig in that configuration if you can to see what you really want. I wish I had. Just my hard learned $.02.

I have a Front end loader on my Ferguson 35 (1957, 30 hp) and it is very useful for lifting and shovelling with a bucket. It will not dig however and has a trip mechanism to tip, less user friendly than a hydraulic tip. Down points are the weight on the front axle, especially without power steering. Also less weight on the rear axle means loss of grip, most noticable when trying to shovel up a pile of soil, muck etc. It is helped to some extent by a concrete weight on the rear linkage.

A cheaper alernative is a rear end loader, operated of the link arms with a hydraulic lift. I have one for my Ford 4000. It is simple to use, the only down side is less height in the lift, but it is still enough to tip into mt tipping trailer.

I took off a big case loader off my MH30
parts tractor. It's still here if you live in S Ontario. I'ts too heavy for a small tractor and you have to have arms like Shwartzneggar to steer.
They made one that's made a front loader of 3in pipe for the early tractors and a they're a lot lighter. You may still be able to find one.

Thanks to each of you for your input. Guess it's really a moot point at this time for me. There isn't anymore money in the tractor fund for more toys, er... essential hardware. If it needs doing it'll have to be with what I have, or stay the way it is. Stay safe all.

Had a flash of brilliance in 1981, and bought myself a Yanmar 240D with FEL, to save what was left of my back.
Since I've had it, I often think back to doing things the hard way before I boght the machine. It's become one indispensible machine here, right along with the air compressor and generator.

Very handy for utility work, although I hate mine on my tractors that I use to cut, rake and bale my hay. It is always in the way and I can't see too good with it on, also can't seem to get close to the fences without tearing something down. I don't have very good vision and have no depth perception so I am at a little disadvantage. But when I am hauling or loading round bales it is priceless.

Do you happen to know where in Texas I can find a front end loader for a massey 165?

I'm with Tyler! I'm constantly surprised at the uses that come up for my FEL. If it's too much trouble or dough to get one for your tractor right now, consider a rear bucket. I've seen a few of them around; hook on the 3ph and move up and down with the rear hydraulics; they look useful, and they're inexpensive.

But there's nothing like the front loader. I use mine in many ways, from moving topsoil and manure to loading it up with chainsaw, fuel, oil, axe, and lunch to head off to do chores somewhere remote. It's great. I can't imagine how many spades full of various materials that loader has saved my back from lifting.

My FEL is one of the most useful items I own for my tractor. It hauls firewood, lifts engines, flattens out ground for sheds and lifts my kids to pick those apples from the tops of the tree.

You ought to see what it does to a blackberry mound.

If I had a single tractor to own, it would have to be equiped with a front end loader.
