I am posting this for a friend who is having a problem with his Massey-Harris Pony. Apparently the battery has been draining (he used to leave it hooked up) and the after being left for a while the generator felt warm as though that is where the juice from the battery was going. I thought it might be the Voltage Regulator and wanted to know what others thought. Thanks in advance.

The best device anyone can have on one of these old machines is a battery cutoff switch. Not only does it prevent a lot of electrical problems, and dead batterys, having a quick way to disconnect the electric may keep a small electrical fire from becoming a tractor consumer.

The generator feels warm because the field is still being excited. A pony excites the generator field thru the headlight switch, 1/2 way out excites generator, all the way excites the generator and operates the lights.
